·         AI vergt uitsluitend elektriciteit momenteel (geleverd via datacenters wereldwijd).

Is there enough energy to continue using and developing AI for centuries to come?

Yes, there is enough energy now, and that will likely remain the case as long as humanity and the Earth exist.

Let’s look at some figures to support this:

•    In 2000, humanity’s total energy consumption was approximately 115,000 TWh (all forms of energy), and in 2025 it was 175,000 TWh. This represents a global increase of 55% over 25 years. AI consumed approximately 200 TWh of that total in 2025 (training/use/infrastructure)

•    The energy reserves for oil, gas, coal, and uranium total approximately 50,000,000 TWh (enough to last another 50–150 years at current consumption rates), the sun provides approximately 1,500,000,000 TWh/year (enough to last at least 1 billion years), wind provides several hundred thousand TWh/year, and geothermal energy is very abundant but difficult to harness

•    AI currently requires only electricity (supplied via data centers worldwide). Global electricity consumption in 2025 was approximately 31,000 TWh. In an extreme scenario (very high global AI penetration), AI would consume about 15,000 TWh in over 50 years. By 2075, that would account for approximately 6–11% of the electricity needed at that time. By that time, AI is expected to effectively consume no energy at all but rather save energy on net through, among other things, more efficient industry, better grid management, reduced transportation, smarter building management, and optimization of production processes.

In short: the availability of energy for humanity is not a problem at all, even if we assume only economically viable energy sources in a geopolitically unstable society. And as long as AI continues to deliver the benefits that have been realized in recent years, the economic and political incentives will be strong enough to free up the energy that AI needs to continue developing.
